आनन्द रामायण की कथा के अनुसार जब समुद्र पर अपनी वानरी सेना के सहियोग से श्री राम चन्द्र जी ने सेतु पुल बांध लिया तब उसकी देख भाल के लिए वीर अनुमान को नियुक्त किया कि कोई राछस इसे छती न पहुंचा सके ।
सन्ध्या के समय हनुमान जी अपने प्रभु श्री राम के ध्यान में मग्न थे उसी समय शनिदेव आये और कहने लगे कि सुना है तुम बहुत बलशाली हो । यदि बलशाली हो तो युद्ध करो ।
उस समय हनुमान ने शनिदेव को समझाया की में अपने प्रभु का ध्यान कर रहा हूँ अतः विघ्न मत ढालो किन्तु शनिदेव न माने तब हनुमान जी ने उन्हें अपनी पूँछ में लपेटकर शनिदेव को पत्थर पर पटकना आरम्भ किया । शनिदेव का शरीर लहूलुहान हो गया और वह गिड़गिड़ा कर हनुमान जी से छमा मांगने लगे और बन्धन मुक्त करने की प्राथना करने लगे । तब अनुमान जी बोले – कि पहले मुझे वचन दो की मेरे प्रभु श्री रामजी के भक्तों को कभी कष्ट नही दोगे ।
शनिदेव ने वचन दिया तब हनुमान जी ने उन्हें बन्धन मुक्त किया ।
लहूलुहान हो चुके शनिदेव ने अपने घावों की पीड़ा मिटाने के लिए हनुमान जी से तेल मांगा हनुमान जी ने जो तेल दिया उसे घावों पर लगाते ही शनिदेव की पीड़ा मिट गयी तभी से शनिदेव को तेल चढ़ाया जाने लगा । तेल चढ़ाने से शनिदेव प्रसन्न होते हैं ।
