अदभूत रामायण में एक कथा प्रसिद्ध है कि श्री हनुमान जी ने जगजननी श्री जानकी के सीमंत में सिंदूर लगा देखकर आश्चर्य पूर्वक पूछा कि माता आपने यह लाल दव्य मस्तक पे क्यों लगाया है श्री. जानकी जी ने ब्रम्हचारी हनुमान जी कि इस सीधी साधी बात पर प्रसन्न होकर कहा पुत्र इसके लगाने से मेरे स्वामी कि दीर्धायु होती है. श्री हनुमान जी यह सुना तो बहुत प्रसन्न हुऐ और विचार किया कि जब ऊँगली भर सिंदूर लगाने से आयुष्य वृद्धि होती है. तो फिर क्यों न सारे शरीर पर इसे पोतकर अपने स्वामी को अजर अम्र ही बना दूँ वैसे ही किया सारे शरीर पर सुंदर पोतकर सभा में पहुंचे तो भगवान उन्हें देखके इतने हसे कि शायद ही कभी इतने हसे होंगे.
श्री हनुमान जी की माता जानकी के वचनों में इससे और भीं अधिक बिस्वास हुआ कहा जाता है कि उस दिन से हनुमान जी कि इस उदात्त -भक्ति के स्मरण में उनके शरीर पर सिंदूर का चोला चढ़ाया जाने लगा ! इस कथानक से यह सहेज मैं ही समझ आ जाता है कि त्रेतायुग युग मैं भी स्त्रियों के सीमंत में सिंदूर लगाने का शास्त्रीय विधान प्रचलित था ! इसका क्या हेतु है ! प्रसंगवश यहाँ रहस्य प्रकट करना अनावश्यक न होगा !
